Kaycee’s Klasic Films – Donnie Darko

Siobhan Kennedy-Clarke’s classic film reviews
Our fictitious reviewer Siobhan (KayCee) didn't have much of an education but she's passionate about films

This film deserves to be more popular than it is but in my humble opinion it has an image problem. If you look at the Wikipedia entry they call it a science fiction film but its not really it has a bit of pseudo sci-fi about it but it’s a comedy that takes the mickey out of horror films and sci-fi films if you ask me.

Secondly the main character Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is always referred to as “troubled” and you get the feeling he’s one of these spooky, scary kids who causes havoc but really he’s not. He’s a nice kid meets a nice girl and just happens to find weird things happening. The name doesn’t help either if he was Donnie Smith it would give a different impression.

Donnie is seeing a psychiatrist played by Katherine Ross looking like she’s spent too much time in the sun and she does the part pretty good.

Thirdly people talk about this giant rabbit that tells Donnie to do things which again makes him sound like a psycho and although there is a large rabbit type thing involved it is not made to look realistic or scary. That’s because this is a comedy like I said.

It also has similarities to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in the way the acting is done particularly Donnie’s parents who are cool and don’t freak out about things like they might in other films. Jake’s sister Maggie Gyllenhaal plays his sister here and she’s good but kind of in second gear all the time because it’s not a big part. She’s quite sexy though I like her she’s done some good stuff and she was good here even as young as she was and her brother too she looked more like him in those days.

Seth Rogen is in it as one of the school bullies he’s a strange guy Seth I think he manages to be amusing but not funny funny whatever he does.

I suppose part of the Ferris thing is it’s set in a school and some of the teachers are funny and there’s pompous people for you to dislike especially this kind of goody goody played by Patrick Swayze who turns out to be into child pornography but again that’s not actually what the film is about.

Drew Barrymore is one of the teachers but she’s a good one I wouldn’t have thought she was old enough but time flies she’s not too bad in this not one of my faves usually.

“Weird? me?” Yes you, Donnie. It says so in my contract.

Like Ferris the soundtrack is full of British music Tears for Fears and Echo and the Bunnymen it seems American kids thought that sort of stuff was cooler than their own country was producing at the time well this was in 2001 so I don’t know really they use the strange slower version of Mad World not the TfF one.

It was supposed to be set in 1988 which is Bueller era I don’t know why they didn’t want it to be contemprey or whatever

The main sci-fi bit is people keep having these clear plastic things growing out of their chest like elongated bubbles and you get the Rabbit talking and giving the date and time of the end of the world but although the captions do a countdown of that its not scary or tense or nothing really. Just a device as they say and it has no baring on what happens I don’t reckon.

So just watch it as a fun film it’s well done well acted and all that stuff you only notice in a film when its not there the quality I mean.

Kaycee’s Klasic Films – Fargo

Siobhan Kennedy-Clarke’s classic film reviews
Please note: this is a humorous blog, and these reviews are not meant to be taken seriously. The fictitious Siobhan (KayCee) didn't have much of an education but she's passionate about films

Fargo

I don’t like absolutely everything the Coen brothers have ever done but when they get it right they really do and that’s the case in this one.

It stars Frances McDormand whose married to one of the brothers and that must make it difficult every time there’s a good role for a woman he probably thinks he’d better ask her to do it or she’ll be annoyed even if its not really up her street. In this case she’s perfect for the roll because she plays a cop (quite a senior one and she was old enough to do that) in this cold part of northern America with snow all over the place and she’s investigating a shooting.

What’s happened is two crooks are paid by this car salesman to kidnap his wife(!) so he can get her rich father to pay the ransom and they will all get rich. Of course they double cross him one of them is Steve Buscemi who you may know as Mr Pink from Reservoir Dogs and he’s quite chatty but the other one a big blond Norwegian-looking bloke is very quiet but he’s a lot nastier than Steve. The salesman is William H. Macy and he’s pretty funny.

Anyways Marjie (Frances) is trying to combine this job with giving encouragement to her husband who has entered some art to be put on a stamp they don’t seem to have kids so their very close and pally like couples are when they don’t have children.

It’s cold cold cold and these two bad guys shoot a cop and find themselves a couple of local girls dead common they are and there’s this funny sex scene and later one of the girls tells Frances (Marjie) that one of the guys was sort of funny looking she’s funny looking if you ask me but that’s just appearances and they don’t count do they?

It’s all as moody as hell with no eyecatching soundtrack but it’s quite funny and the Coens do like to be funny. If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like when a human body is forced through a wood chipping machine in a snowy back yard just watch this and you’ll find out it doesn’t look so bad just a load of red snow but it’s probably worse in real life even the smell must be weird.

Its difficult with a film like this to tell if the director just means it to be funny or if he’s trying to tell you something and make you think. You could see it as a comedy or a sort of adventure film or even just showing a woman doing a dirty job kind of thing. Whatever sometimes you don’t have to analyse things too deep and just enjoy it if it’s enjoyable which it is so job done I say.

Kaycee’s Klasic Films – Little Voice

Siobhan Kennedy-Clarke’s classic film reviews
Please note: this is a spoof. Siobhan (KayCee) didn't have much of an education but she's passionate about films

little voice

I don’t know if this was a big hit around the world like it was in the UK but it should of been because it’s a real classy movie get me I’ve come over all American. It’s full of British actors including Michael Caine which is always a good sign and Jane Horrocks whose best known for Absolutely Fabulous on TV she’s got this funny northern accent which is okay in this because it’s set in Yorkshire.

Jane is a shy, weird girl called Laura whose known as LV short for Little Voice I suppose because she’s little and the most outstanding thing about her is her voice. Honestly she can do impressions of Shirley Bassey and Judy Garland people like that it’s amazing it’s like she comes to life when she’s doing that but she’s so so shy the rest of the time.

Her Dad’s dead and you get the feeling it’s all her Mum’s fault it’s Brenda Blethyn funny name but you’d know her when you see her she got famous quite late in her career. She’s a pushy character what never grew up if you know what I mean and she’s had more boyfriends than Laura’s had hot dinners. I know my Mum’s no angel but at least she always remembers she’s got a daughter even when she’s got the hots for a fella.

Into little Laura’s life comes a telephone engineer Ewan McGregor he’s always good as well and he usually plays a nice guy so you get the feeling LV’s going to be okay in the end. But of course like I’ve said before if you just let that happen your in for a very short film so they’ve got to throw in some problems.

Her Mum’s new boyfriend Ray (Michael Caine) is an appealing chap and you wouldn’t mind him being your step Dad he’s good looking and funny he’s a showbiz manager whose acts are all useless so he’s never made any money he says to Brenda Wotsit “You and me have been shoveling shit all our lives,” which is pretty funny in the film but there’s lots of people like that in real life. Not licorally shoveling poo maybe but that kind of thing.

Anyways Ray thinks he can make LV a star and make him and her Mum rich at the same time so he books her a gig at a nightclub. The problems I was talking about come in and you can imagine it dosen’t go well I could never write this sort of thing because I just want everybody to be happy so I’d have LV coming out of her shell because she loves Ewan and she becomes famous and marries him and her Mum and Ray get a big house by the sea and everybody’s happy. But that’s not what happens.

It’s funny though if you don’t take it too serious and Ray sings this Roy Orbison song It’s Over and he ends up shouting and screaming it while the building burns down. One thing Michael Caine can’t do is sing unless he was just pretending but Jane Horrocks can she’s brilliant.

Kaycee’s Klasic Films – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Siobhan Kennedy-Clarke’s classic film reviews

(It  pains me to have to point this out, but it’s a spoof – the bad grammar etc .is deliberate)

Ferris

If you’ve never seen this and didn’t even when you were a kid you have to see it now right because its brilliant. It is so funny you don’t have to be a teenager nobody is that far ahead that they couldn’t get into this.

It’s about this guy Ferris (Mathew Broderick) whose very charismatic and gets away with everything he decides to take a day off school and asks his friend Cameron to do it too. Plus he’s already seems to have asked his girlfriend Sloane Peterson to join them and they go into town and have lunch.

Cameron dosen’t want to do it because he’s not as slick and confident as Ferris but Ferris persuades him in the end and they both pretend to have the flu. They need a car so Ferris wants to take Cameron’s Dad’s priceless Ferrari but Cameron’s scared but Ferris persuades him again. Meanwhile Sloane has gone to school but the secretary gets a fake phone call saying her grandma’s died and Ferris goes to pick her up in disguise. That’s the funniest part of the film for me the nurse comes into the classroom and Sloane starts putting her jacket on even before she is told the news.

The headmaster is a bit of an idiot and he hates Ferris but he is outsmarted and they go into town the boys and Sloane that is and Ferris pretends to be a businessman who makes sausages and his name is on the booking list for lunch at a posh restaurant.

He joins in with a street party and sings a song and they have a great time but the car hadn’t done many miles and Cameron knows his dad will notice but Ferris says all they have to do is drive it backwards and the clock will turn back of course it dosen’t work and then Cameron comes over all rebellious and smashes the car up his dad’s going to kill him.

Ferrari
Nice car if your into that the guys like Ferraris don’t they

Ferris has to get home before his parents do because he’s supposed to be ill in bed but his folks are quite nice actually it’s just his sister Jeannie who is jealous of him.

There’s a lot more to it but basically it’s just really funny and eventually Jeannie gets off with Charlie Sheen whose a no good druggie in a leather jacket but at least he cheers the girl up. You don’t know if Ferris is going to marry Sloane or not in real life it would never work cos he’s too adventurous I think but their crazy about each other so who knows. Anyways it’s only a film but really good fun.
